Onion Cafe – Seoul

Rows of metal trays heavily laden with pastries, sandwiches, and tarts, greeted me as I walked into Onion cafe in Seongdong-gu. The particular pastry that vied for my attention was the high peak of golden bread, lavishly dusted with icing sugar. This happens to be their signature bread, Pandor, which means golden bread. Now, I know full well, that all that glitters is supposedly not gold, but boy, these mountains of golden vanilla were not only ‘glittering’, they were calling my name!

We chose our pastries (I ordered the sugary mountain, Pandor, of course!) and lattes, and made our way through the web of concrete, steel, and buzz. The cafe with its concrete floors and walls has a clean and minimalistic feel to it, yet it still manages to maintain a marvelous sense of warmth and charm. The building has its own unique character, as it was previously a factory.

Onion cafe is located in the neighbourhood of Seongdong, which happens to be Seoul’s shoe district. The journey from the subway station exit 2 to the cafe is quick, and a cultural treat as you pass by many fascinating shoe stores. The experience of visiting Onion cafe was a lovely one and I will most definitely be back. Their golden bread sure deserves a gold star! I especially look forward to visiting in the summer time and sitting on the rooftop, or at one of the outdoor tables. Maybe I will even bump into you there?

Onion cafe is open weekdays 8am- 10pm and weekends 10-10pm.
