Nieu- Bethesda Vlog
Every town holds mysterious and intriguing stories within its perimeters. The Eastern Cape village of Nieu-Bethesda, hidden between the Sneeuberg Mountains is no exception. If you are a traveller, an explorer, an artist or just enjoy a good getaway with a good story, you will enjoy this. I hadn’t expected to film anything whilst travelling to Nieu- Bethesda, but I just couldn’t help myself.
A necessary part of visiting this little Karoo town is, most definitely, a visit to Helen Martin’s Owl House and Camel Yard, where the spirit of her fascinating life and legacy live on. (I’m going to let the vlog speak for itself.)
Nieu-Bethesda combines old world charm with eclectic artsy. There is no wifi, no ATM, no streetlights, and no petrol station… But OODLES of character, creativity, camaraderie and community certainly make up for it!
When next you visit, do treat yourself by stopping at The Two Goats Brewery & Deli. Here, a platter of scrumptious artisans produce, all made on site, is washed down well with Karoo or honey ale. The home made chutneys, pickles and goats cheeses are a treat for those who appreciate food made with care and in small batches. After partaking in a feast, a large outdoor bed awaits any traveller in need of a siesta. There is such a sense of tranquillity about the place.
My day is never complete without a good coffee. The coffee, roasted at the deli, added to the charm of this dusty corner of the world.
Miss Helen’s legacy sure has added light and sparkle to this town. I look forward to my next visit!
